| A Cost Saver, A Life Saver!
~Testimonial |

"I hope by sharing my story, companies may help
others get life saving information through the BeniComp
Advantage program."
"When I heard about the changes being made in our
employer’s health plan, I didn’t like it. I knew it was
probably going to cost my family more money. The medical
plan deductible was really HIGH. Our employer told us
that a new supplemental insurance would give us the
opportunity to earn four $500 credits to reduce our cost
so that we may not have to pay any more than what we
previously paid with our previous lower deductible."
Looking at the credit criteria, I knew my blood
pressure might disqualify me from one of the $500
credits. Still, I had to
participate if I wanted the opportunity to reduce my
deductible costs as much as possible, so I enrolled in
the BeniComp Advantage program. To my surprise I earned
the blood pressure credit, but discovered my total
cholesterol number was 267. I was shocked! I had no
idea. I felt fine...

| U.S. obesity might weigh on wealth
as heavily as health |
| by Daniel Costello
It’s familiar news by now that America’s obesity
epidemic is both dangerous and costly. Obesity
significantly increases the risk of many diseases,
including heart disease and diabetes, and is associated
with at least 112,000 deaths a year. The economic effect
is equally startling: Obese patients add an estimated
billion a year to the nation’s medical bill.

"Try Tax Breaks for Weight Loss Or a 'Fat' Tax at
the Check Out"
Despite a lifetime of hard living, cheap cigarettes
and even cheaper booze, a 72-year-old patient of mine
continues to sputter along, his skeletal body flirting
with the need for life support.
Financing for a good portion of the expensive
medications that help keep him alive falls under the new
Medicare prescription drug benefit that starts next
year. He told me that with all the money he saves thanks
to Medicare, he plans to go back to smoking the
often-more-expensive unfiltered Camels. Doctors know
that lifestyle choices are killing our patients. I teach
and cajole and try to motivate and set an example, but
it too often fails to dislodge ingrained behavior. What
is missing from the cost equation in health policy is
personal accountability..
